The arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas opened to the public in 1982, under the title, “The Michael C. Rockefeller Wing”. This wing is named after Nelson Rockefeller’s son, Michael Rockefeller, who died while this accumulating works in New Guinea. Within the collection are work, sculpture, images, graphic arts and examples of structure.
There are greater than 2,500 pictures taken between 1904 and 1949, and hours of movie footage between 1935 and 1937 in its assortment. The museum’s Tibetan art galleries are considered among the best on the earth. The collection was purchased from Christian missionaries in the early twentieth century.
