PNC Expands Branches, Announces CFO Transition

PNC is expanding its branch network, adding 53 new locations across eight markets in South Carolina and Georgia, and 10 more in Texas, Florida, and North Carolina. This builds on the bank’s existing expansion efforts, according to a Friday announcement.
The Pittsburgh-based bank also revealed a leadership change. Alex Overstrom, currently the retail chief and executive vice president, will step into the role of CFO in March 2027. He will succeed Rob Reilly, who has held the position for 13 years.
Branch Expansion Focused on Southeast
PNC’s latest branch expansion targets the Southeast, with new locations planned for cities like Greenville, Charleston, and Columbia in South Carolina, as well as Savannah and Augusta in Georgia. This move aligns with the bank’s national strategy and builds upon previous expansion announcements. The expansion into these markets is part of PNC’s broader strategy to deepen its presence in the region.
Last November, PNC announced plans to add 100 new branches, bringing its total target to 300 by 2030. This followed a 2024 announcement doubling its new branch goal to 200 by 2029. With the latest additions, PNC’s expansion plans now total approximately 370 new locations by 2031. It’s become something of a November tradition for PNC to bolster its branch opening plans as it pursues a national strategy.
Leadership Transition: Reilly to Advise, Overstrom Takes Reins
Rob Reilly will become executive vice chair and senior advisor to CEO Bill Demchak. Overstrom, who has led retail banking since 2022, will officially become CFO on March 1, 2027, after the 2026 financial reports are filed.
Strategic Moves Amid Industry Shifts
PNC’s $627.8 billion in assets shows its significant presence in the banking sector. CEO Bill Demchak emphasized the need for “critical share” in retail banking, stating at the BancAnalysts Association of Boston conference, “When the music stops, you have to have critical share if you want to be a real retail player in the country.” The bank’s expansion plans, including the addition of about 53 locations across eight markets in South Carolina and Georgia, and 10 more in Texas, Florida, and North Carolina, reflect its strategy to strengthen its national footprint.
